Applications for Managing Entries

On this page we describe setting up calendars with web and OS-specific clients (Windows, Linux, Mac, Android).

Web Client

For managing your calendar events and addresses from anywhere, we use an open source web application. This web application is pre-configured to work with our calendar service which means you just have to login using your math:account and everything works out of the box.

Linux/Windows/Mac: Thunderbird with Lightning and SoGo Connector

Please follow the instruction manual for setting up calendars with the Lightning extension.

To synchronize the remote address books from our calendar server, please follow these steps:

  1. Install the SoGo connector for Thunderbird.

    1. Download the connector from https://sogo.nu/download.html#/frontends
    2. Open Thunderbird, go to the Add-ons Manager and use the tools menu to the left of the search field to Install Add-on From File….
    3. Select the downloaded extension from step 1, install it and then restart Thunderbird.

  2. Open the Thunderbird address book and choose File → New → Remote Address Book.

    In the dialog enter anything you like for the Name and the following for the URL:

    https:​//calendar.mat.univie.ac.at/caldav.php/MATH:ACCOUNT/addresses/

    Please replace MATH:ACCOUNT with your math:account.

  3. Choose the synchronization options you like and click on OK after which the address book is created.

  4. The final step is to right click on the created address book name and click Synchronize which will perform the initial synchronization.

 

Android: DAVdroid

The Android application DAVdroid is a CalDAV and CardDAV synchronisation app for Android that works great with our calendar service. It can be bought from various app stores or downloaded free of charge from F-Droid (see DAVdroid on F-Droid).

Before you install DAVdroid you have to install the "Tasks app (by Marten Gajda)" from GooglePlayStore (search for "Tasks Marten Gajda") if you want to manage tasks.

Once the application is installed follow these instructions:

  • Go to "System Settings/Accounts" and create a new DAVdroid account.
  • Make sure that https is selected and enter calendar.mat.univie.ac.at/caldav.php/MATH:ACCOUNT (where MATH:ACCOUNT is your math:account) into the "Root URL" field.
  • Enter your faculty credentials in the "User name" and "Password" fields and click the "Next" action button.
  • Select the address book and one or more calendars that should be synchronized and click the "Next" action button.
  • The final step is to enter an account name (anything is valid but it is recommended to enter your e-mail address associated with our calendar service, normally your university e-mail address) and then click on the "Add account" button.

After that the selected address book and calendars are available from the Google address book and calendar apps, and the entries will automatically be synchronized to our calendar service.

If you don’t like the default Google calendar application, the aCalendar app is free of charge (there is also a paid version) and is quite a good replacement.
